Defining the threshold for part acceptance requires a deep understanding of the intended application. In the world of additive manufacturing, especially when using high-speed systems like those from Bambu Lab, the distinction between a failure and a variable print is often misunderstood. A functional variation impacts the part's ability to perform its mechanical role, such as a bearing fit or structural integrity, while a cosmetic variation is purely visual, like a minor surface sheen change or a faint layer line. Recognizing these differences prevents unnecessary waste and keeps projects on schedule.
Technical Protocol
To maintain a lean production cycle, teams must implement a strict protocol for evaluating prints. This protocol shifts the focus from how it looks to how it works unless the part is specifically designated as a visual prototype. We categorize these differences based on their impact on the assembly chain and the end-user experience. It involves a systematic check of three primary areas where variation commonly occurs during FDM processes.
- Dimensional Accuracy Check: Verify that all mating surfaces and mounting holes meet the tolerance specifications regardless of surface finish. Use calibrated calipers to ensure the geometry aligns with the CAD intent.
- Structural Integrity Assessment: Inspect for layer delamination or internal voids that could compromise the mechanical strength of the component. Pay close attention to high-stress areas like corners and narrow walls.
- Surface Finish Categorization: Identify if visual artifacts like ringing or ghosting interfere with the part's function or if they are acceptable within the project's aesthetic guidelines. Document these as non-critical if they do not touch other parts.
Verification Criteria
Verification is the final gate before a part moves to assembly. If a variation is deemed cosmetic, it is documented but accepted to avoid the perfection trap. If it is functional, the root cause—be it a slicer setting in Bambu Studio or a hardware calibration issue—must be addressed before the next iteration. This methodical approach prevents the loss of material and time chasing aesthetic goals that do not add value to the final mechanical product. Every decision must be backed by the specific needs of the part's role in the larger system.
